About.

Open since July 2016, The Sustainable Studio was based in the former munitions factory for 7 years on Curran Road in Cardiff until recently moving to the former Transport Club on Tudor Street.

It is an artist-led space that provides affordable studios, professional development and opportunities for makers, designers and creative start-ups.

We work alongside organisations and collaborate with educational establishments to provide opportunities for students, as well as the community to support their creative journey. We value the partnerships that we have established over the years that make up our creative network across Wales and beyond. These supportive frameworks create a vibrant environment for us all to explore new and innovative ways of working together in the arts.

“We are MORE THAN JUST A SPACE, we are a creative community dedicated to helping each other succeed.”

MEET THE TEAM

For the last 15 years, the founders of The Sustainable Studio, Sarah and Julia, have been focused on working with grassroots organisations that represent the BAME and LBTQIA+ communities. They have had the privilege of educating and nurturing young talent through delivering accessible short courses in fashion and design, as well as programming activities that relate to the industry’s process, including fashion shows, points of sale, self-promotion, personal development, and formulating entrepreneurial ideas.

Sustainability is at the heart of everything they do, from garment construction within their slow fashion brand Dati Clothing, including collaborations with local community groups such as Welsh Ballroom, and upcycling projects with the South Wales creative community. Sustainability is also a key concern with how Sarah and Julia run the studio, and they carefully consider every decision, aiming to collectively reduce the impact of the space and their creative practice on the environment.

The Sustainable Studio also houses many other makers and small businesses founded upon principles of sustainability, from natural fabric dyeing to recycled fashion, offering a supportive space for exploring eco-conscious making – though it is by no means a requirement that members of the studio focus on sustainability within their work.
