Book Launch - Taiye Omokore

my story in red

Taiye Omokore’s My Story in Red is more than a photography book—it’s a deeply personal journey that bridges the vibrant heritage of Nigeria with the landscapes and culture of Wales. Through evocative images and storytelling, the book explores universal themes of identity, culture, and belonging.

Growing up in Nigeria, Taiye was surrounded by rich traditions, with memories of his mother wrapping her gele with pride or the vibrant red hues of celebratory attire. These memories became anchors to her roots, even as she moved to Wales in pursuit of a new life. In Wales, Taiye discovered parallels in resilience, passion, and symbolism, reflected in the red dragon of the Welsh flag.

The book captures this interplay between tradition and adaptation, showcasing striking portraits of individuals who, like Taiye, navigate the duality of preserving their heritage while embracing new identities. Each image is a conversation—a reflection of migration, strength, and the beauty of cultural fusion.

Launching on February 7th, My Story in Red will be available on Amazon worldwide, with 20 limited signed copies offered at the launch event. This book is a celebration of resilience, connection, and the shared human experience that transcends borders.

The Venue is on the ground floor and features an accessible toilet. Please email us at hi@thethesustainable.studio if you have any questions relating to access.

The Cracks We See Through

Rebecca is excited to announce the launch of debut novel, The Cracks We See Through, which will take place on 15th February 2025, from The Canopi/The Sustainable Studio.

Life is colourful, and full, and wild. In a world brought to its knees, we are thriving. We eat well, we play, we grow, we love. We are happy. For as long as I can avoid thinking about her, I can see the beauty.

The world as we know it has devolved into violence. Society has crumbled. Riots, mass murder and destruction are rife.

After escaping the violence of London, Anya hides away on an isolated Welsh island with her husband, daughters, and dog. Life is idyllic—as long as she doesn’t look too closely at all she has lost.

Thousands of miles away in the Middle East, Niamh is struggling to find her way home to the UK. In a world with limited transportation and communication, she finds refuge in a walled city run by women. But the security of the walled city is a cover for a much darker secret that hides beneath the surface.

As cracks begin to appear in Niamh’s safehouse, Anya too must face the imminent collapse of the walls she has built to keep her family safe. Borders are reopening, threatening the seclusion of her isolated life. Faced with the possibility of more violence and death, Anya must make a decision that will shake her family to its core.

From debut novelist Rebecca Miles Henson,The Cracks We See Throughis a story of home, of hardship, and of finding love and light in the darkest of places.

In addition to celebrating the book, the event will showcase artwork from two distinctly different artists. Chris Williams (@chriswilliamsartist), whose lino print of the Llanddwyn Lighthouse has adorned Rebecca's wall for the past four years—and is the very location in which Anya’s story unfolds—is one of Chris' most well-loved works.

Joining him is Susan Vaughan Williams (@susanvaughanwilliams), whose vibrant, abstract, and beautiful work will also be displayed. Rebecca feels incredibly fortunate to have their art sharing the space at this special event.

The Venue is on the ground floor and features an accessible toilet. Please email us at hi@thethesustainable.studio if you have any questions relating to access.

Jukebox Collective X Bleak Fabulous

Jukebox Collective X Bleak Fabulous

Bleak Fabulous and Jukebox Collective launch their editorial series and zine exploring Welsh heritage as envisioned through the creative lens of young people in Cardiff. Shot around Butetown and Cardiff Bay, home to one of the UK’s oldest Black communities, the project celebrates a modern-day Wales that connects tradition with diverse cultural identities.

The project led by Charlotte James and Clémentine Schneidermann involved a series of creative workshops with students from Jukebox Collective’s Academy, a programme supporting the next generation of Welsh creative talent. The students, ages 7 to 16 and primarily from Black and ethnic minority backgrounds, took part in workshops on costume design, styling, photography, illustration, and art direction. These sessions encouraged an exploration of Welsh pride and identity, where students gained new creative skills like moodboarding, styling, and customization, leveraging their heritage as a guide for expression.

Inspired by the iconic Welsh hat, dating back to the nineteenth century, the project used this national iconography as a creative launching point. Working with Welsh costume designer Ffian Jones, the students engaged in a hat creation workshop, modernising the traditional item by imbuing it with their unique creative and cultural influences. They also incorporated other elements of Welsh national dress into their costumes, such as the red woollen cloak, paisley shawl, and Pais a Betgwn.

Schneidermann photographed the finished outfits in Butetown and Cardiff Bay, while James oversaw the creative direction. The images reflect the playful nature of the participants’ self-exploration, combining social documentary, fashion, and formal portraiture. The costumes’ rich colours set against the subtle greys and whites of Butetown’s homes serve as a reminder for the evolving identities within these communities: old, diverse and full of life against its post-industrialised past and emerging present.

From a Prince to a Cross-dressing Wrestler: A Punk Rock Odyssey in Florida

Join Cardiff-based artist and musician, S Mark Gubb, as he takes us on a musical and historical journey through Pensacola, Florida, and its connections with Wales – from an ancient Prince to a cross-dressing wrestler.

This summer, Mark was artist-in-residence with The 309 Punk Project in Pensacola. Whilst there, he wrote and recorded an EP of songs with local musicians, breathing new life and visibility into the connections he uncovered.

The 309 Punk Project is an organisation based in the one of the longest-surviving punk houses in the southern American States, having been home to a revolving door of musicians, artists, activists, and gigs, for over 30 years.

In this one-off sharing event and listening party, Mark will talk about his time in Pensacola, the bizarre range of Welsh connections to the city, and play the songs from the EP he recorded whilst there, recently released across all digital streaming platforms by THURST Records.

(Mark’s residency in Pensacola was made possible by an International Opportunities Grant from Wales Arts International.)

This event is sponsored by Cardiff Music City festival

Grief Disco

Grief Disco

Grief impacts us all and can be a lonely and isolating time. We believe in the medicine of music and dance.

You and your grief are so welcome here.

Welcome to Cardiff's first Grief `Disco. We are offering you the opportunity to dance, connect and shake off our grief on the dance floor.

Leah Sian Davies and Georgina Jones are the creators and your hosts.....

'We have both experienced significant loss in our lives and and have found healing in coming together to dance, find joy and connect with ourselves and others on the dance floor. We are building a community to create a positive and uplifting experience for anyone who is grieving and who would love to feel this connection with others who relate.'

Special guest DJ Sarah Sweeney Co founder of Eves' Drop Collective will be spinning the decks alongside the incredible house vocalist Vanessa Freeman. Together, they will create an uplifting musical experience designed to move the body and soul.

There will also be opportunities for you to explore various creative activities in our chill-out area if you wish.

Plus The Sustainable Studio bar will be offering a range of non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks to keep the energy flowing through the night.

Maybe you have lost someone or maybe a friend is struggling and you want to support them. This could be a wonderful way to support each other.

Grief is still such a taboo subject.

We are breaking this taboo by the power of music.

'We dance to remember not to forget.
We dance not to escape but to connect.'

STATE OF ART Exhibition

We are delighted to invite you to the preview of STATE OF ART, a unique exhibition celebrating the incredible outcomes of our recent project with a special focus on Identity.

The aim of STATE OF ART was to provide alternative and imaginative educational opportunities for young people, helping them to improve their skills, build confidence, and connect with others in a creative and safe space. Over the course of 11 workshops, participants came together to express themselves, share ideas, co-produce, and co-design a variety of art pieces. These workshops explored diverse themes such as street culture and fashion, fabric design, expressive writing, and illustration.

STATE OF ART represents a creative collaboration between Beth Morris Workshops and The Sustainable Studio. This community project is proudly partnered by The Arts for Health and Wellbeing team at Cardiff & Vale Health Charity and is fully funded by The Arts Council of Wales.

Join us at The Sustainable Studio to celebrate the achievements of these young artists and to witness the inspiring art they have created. Your presence would mean a lot to us and to the participants who have dedicated their time and creativity to this project.

We look forward to seeing you there!
